CKXU Radio Fundrive 2023 | Bubblegum Broadcast
As you may or may not be aware, I have developed something of an affection for our local radio station — CKXU 88.3 — and every year they put together a week long fundraiser, themed for O U R pleasure called FUNdrive. This years theme: Bubblegum Broadcast. A truly on brand theme for the station as it perfectly encapsulates their ethos and culture. One of collaboration, community and fun.
HOWEVER…
What you may NOT be aware of is that campus and community radio stations across Canada are being hit hard. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has made the decision to block all news sources in the country, affecting not only Facebook but also Instagram. Unfortunately, “Not-For-Profit Radio was unanimously included in amendments to Bill C18 as it was passed because these stations are required by license to create local news at 15%, the only license required to do so.” [source]
Beyond reaching out to your local MP and Meta directly concerning this really fucked up maneuver by Meta (as if the billions of dollars per quarter wasn’t enough, but sure, screw the little guy), CKXU will need your support now more than ever during their annual FUNdrive.
The purpose of this years FUNdrive is as follows:
We invite the community to celebrate another year of FUNdrive with the CKXU Crew as we work to raise $20,000 to overhaul our Music Library space to increase accessibility, create clear organization structures for all physical CDs, vinyl, and tapes, and to increase our digital server space for the Digital Music Library! With the increase in digital music releases and our hope to turn the Music Library into a Living Archive, this is a much needed step for CKXU to continue to best support local and emerging musicians and provide volunteers with easily accessible and navigable musical resources!
Some of the events happening this year are pictured below!
Support for this years FUNdrive can be done via direct donation (pledging) but if you can’t do that, spreading the word as much as possible is HUGE! Tell your friends and family about the super rad organization that is CKXU and how they need our community to FRICKIN’ R A L L Y.
You can also sign up for the newsletter via their website, and make sure you are following their ckxu_music Instagram page for updates where possible.
If you are interested in pledging you can do that one of three ways:
Aaaaaannnnddd…. there are a variety of perks and rad swag that you get for donating, depending on the amount you donate! I know right! You just didn’t even THINK it could get better, but lo and behold, it does.
$30 — A sticker AND a friends card. If you were wondering, the friends card offers discounts at over 40 local businesses in the Southern Alberta region, including yours truly!
$50 — All the stuff above AND that super rad toque you see below? Mine hasn’t left my head since I got one. It’s got a full-colour embroidered logo on a black woven toque — that YES, keeps its shape. I checked. After I slept in it. Oops.
$75 — ALL the stuff above AND that incredible hot pink t-shirt you see everywhere? Holy frick. The t-shirts are a screen printed full colour logo on a heathered pink t-shirt. (Available in S - 3XL)
$150 — Y’all this is where it gets real. For real for real. Not only do you get the sticker, the friends card, the toque and the t-shirt but you also get a 1/4 zip-up pullover sweatshirt. When I say the inside of this sweatshirt feels like the softest part of a dogs ear (yes you know exactly what I’m talking about) I’m not lying. Would I ever lie to you? Never.
$250 — And last, but certainly not least, if you want to matchy match with a bestie or a love, why not just got for the Double Bubble Buds pledge pack. Two birds ... pulled … stoned ... carrots. What? Now I’m lost. Anyway.
BUT WAIT THERES MORE!
All the incredible merch you see here is made by local humans from Sinking Ship Supply Co., photos done by YOURS TRULY, and the lovely location for said photos? Our very own local brewery Theoretically Brewing Co.
Local supporting local supporting even more local. Are you titillated? Same.
For the love of local radio and businesses, for the love of non-profits, GOD for the love of supporting something where community is at the centre of it instead of supporting the endless drudgery of end stage capitalism (phewf I almost made it through this entire blog without mentioning my hatred of capitalism) — this here indeed is a deeply worthy cause.
I’ll drop the link to their website again here so that you don’t have to use those thumbs. I know I’m a blessing.
